表面には桐の花葉および「日本国」と「五百円」の文字が、裏面には製造年表記と上下に竹の葉、左右に橘の小枝がデザインされており、裏面の「500」の数字の書体はC五百円券に由来する。
材質は銅75%、ニッケル25%の白銅製であり、同じ組成の白銅製の五十円白銅貨・百円白銅貨より大きくすることは当然だが、どの程度大きくするかについては携帯の便、他の貨幣との識別、諸外国の高額貨幣とのバランスなどを検討した結果、直径26.5 mmという大きさになった。なお厚みは実測で1.85 mmとなっている。
縁には偽造防止技術の一つとして「NIPPON ◆ 500 ◆」の文字（レタリング）が繰り返し刻印されている。
これは造幣局創業以来初めて採用された技術である。
円周の文字の刻印の向きに対して裏表を揃えずに刻印しているため、「NIPPON ◆ 500 ◆」の文字を正しく読めるように置いた時に上面が表になるものと裏になるものとがほぼ半数ずつ存在する。
歴史百円硬貨の流通高が硬貨全体の60％を超え、また自動販売機の急速な普及を背景として更に高額面の硬貨が求められたことにより、世界的にみれば異例の高額面硬貨として発行された。
臨時補助貨幣として発行が開始された通常貨幣はこの五百円白銅貨が最後である。
通貨変造事件の多発により、2000年（平成12年）に五百円ニッケル黄銅貨に引き継がれる形で発行が停止された。ーー管理番号：co-02
