『FINAL FANTASY X』(2001年7月発売)のその後の世界を描き、外伝的作品として発売された『FANAL FANTASY X-2』(2003年3月発売)。その北米版を基にしつつ、さらに新たな要素を追加した作品がこれで、簡単に説明すると『FFX-2』の英語バージョン(日本語字幕付き)に、新エピソードと新システムが追加された作品といえるものだ。
今作の大きなポイントとなるのが、『FFX-2』のその後のエピソードを描いた「ラストミッション」の追加で、この場において本当の意味での「FFX」の締めを飾るエピソード(日本語ボイス)を見ることができる。そのイベントを見るには、国内版かインターナショナルの「FFX-2」をクリアするという条件があるものの、ゲーム部分は本編とは別に独立して遊べるダンジョン型RPGとなっているのが特徴。マップは新規で用意され、ダンジョン内は新システムによるバトルが展開される。
もう1つ大きな追加要素となるのが、物語序盤からプレイ可能な「クリーチャークリエイト」。カモメ団の飛空挺から罠を仕掛け、魔物を捕らえるとともに仲間にするというもので、捕獲した魔物は戦闘で味方として参加させることができる。育成的な要素といえるもので、育てることで魔物ごとのエンディング的なイベントを見られるほか、魔物以外のノンプレイヤーキャラを捕まえることもできたりする。
そのほか、『FFX-2』の特徴ともいえるドレスの追加が行われるほか、新たなボスも追加される。(田村 雅)
